FROSTBURGFIRST SEEKS ARTS CO-OP AND BUSINESS-ARTIST PARTNERSHIPS
FrostburgFirst is seeking artists who are interested in establishing an artist cooperative business and/or artists who would like to participate in a partnership program with existing Frostburg businesses.
As the Arts and Entertainment District gets underway in the Mountain City, FrostburgFirst will assist with the establishment of an arts cooperative by connecting interested artists, and providing assistance in developing a model business plan. Assistance will also be provided to locate space in which to house the co-operative.
FrostburgFirst is also seeking artists and businesses who are interested in establishing mutually beneficial partnerships to integrate the arts into the fabric of the business community. Businesses have established business hours and systems in place to process sales. The presence of art in the businesses will bring traffic into the stores and create movement throughout the district.
These partnerships and an artist’s cooperative would be the source of arts events, brochures about touring the arts in Frostburg, and publicity for the businesses and artists upon the establishment of these new ventures. The Allegany Arts Council will be working with FrostburgFirst to help support both initiatives.
Area artists and Frostburg businesses are encouraged to contact Main Street Manager Jerilyn Jackson for information about how to be a part of this exciting new venture. Call 301-689-6900 or send an e-mail to frostburgfirst@gmail.com.
2008 Youghiogheny River of the Year Sojourn Registration
Register now to participate in the Yough River Sojourn from Thursday, July 17 to Sunday, July 20!
The Youghiogheny River Sojourn is a 4-day excursion on the Youghiogheny River, simply known as the Yough, in southwestern Pennsylvania. We’ll begin our journey at the Youghiogheny River Lake near Confluence and will follow the river north as it meanders towards McKeesport. Along the way we’ll discover the unique ecology, culture and rich history of the Youghiogheny River corridor. The trip will feature one Class I and II whitewater day on July 17, and a Class III whitewater rafting trip with professional guides in each boat on July 18, with a bicycling alternative. On July 19 and 20, we’ll spend two days leisurely floating the northern section of the Youghiogheny, where we’ll experience the changing character of the river and the historic communities along its banks. No experience is necessary. This trip caters to beginner or first-time paddlers, but will have plenty of excitement for river enthusiasts of all ability levels. All meals from lunch July 17 through lunch July 20 are including in the cost of the trip, as well as camping and activities. Boats are included in pricing July 17 and 18, and can be rented on July 19 and 20 as part of the registration. As an alternative, people may bring their own bicycles or may rent bikes on their own to ride the parallel Great Allegheny Passage. Hurry, space is limited! Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is VOICE and what does it do?
V.O.I.C.E. operates as a consultant and a liaison for FSU and the surrounding communities by connecting volunteers with community service sites and their projects. Our office seeks out needs in the community that are not being met, and provides a student work force to help resolve the issue. These projects range from city-wide cleanups to providing a work force to help local organizations set up and run events. Through volunteerism, the community and its organizations are able to pursue more events and projects, and students are able to get real-world experience in a variety of skills.
2. How can I register a site with VOICE?
Registering a site with VOICE is very simple. All you need to do is contact the office with XX pieces of important information: The name of your site or event, the name of a primary contact for the site or event, the date and time volunteers are needed, the types of duties volunteers will perform, the number of volunteers you would like to have, and whether the event is one-time or recurring.
The VOICE Clearinghouse can be contacted by phone at (301)687-7598 or by email at VOICE@Frostburg.Edu
3. How does VOICE recruit student volunteers?
VOICE Clearinghouse has a multitude of advertising strategies available. We utilize FSU emailing lists, communicate with student organizations, and even run articles in University publications. In addition, VOICE works closely with several volunteering-oriented organizations, including HallSTARS!, The Student Center for Volunteerism, and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. VOICE also has a website on Blackboard, a student educational website, and a newsletter.
4. What can I do to ensure I get the volunteers I need?
The most important thing you can do is register your site as soon as you know you will need volunteers. The earlier your site is registered, the more time we will have to recruit volunteers.
